Judy Stephens’ quilt Ban Neocotinoids, prompted by the crisis in bee numbers and our Region 12 challenge to Say it with Flowers, has been accepted into the Hidden Histories exhibition going on display with Grosvenor’s quilt shows around the country in 2013 and 2014.
Her small framed piece called Celt won a prize in the Aber Valley Art Festival in October. The festival’s theme was “Out of the Shadows” to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the Universal Colliery explosion which killed 439 men and boys from Senghenydd and neighbouring Abertridwr where Judy lived for ten years. A memorial to the lost miners has been unveiled at Senghenydd. It includes the name, age and address of every man killed and poignantly reveals many fathers dying with their teenage sons.
