Cwilt Cymru member Judith Barker has two quilts in the Structures exhibition which runs 19 – 24 November at the Old Fire Station Gallery, Upper Market Place, Henley on Thames RG9 2AQ.
Cwilt Cymru member Bethan M. Hughes is showing work at the Carriageworks in Denbigh until December 6.
The work is inspired by the language, history and culture of Wales and the desire to share the stories. The most recent work responds to the words of Emrys ap Iwan who, over 100 years ago, charged his fellow Welsh people to remain together as a nation and preserve the language – “Ymgedwch yn genedl, cedwch yr iaith”. The body of work also reflects on how history can be often be hidden until we look deeper and search for it.
During the opening evening Bethan spoke about the the quilts’ inspiration
and folk singer and harpist Mair Tomos Ifans performed Welsh songs and triple-harp melodies which linked to the themes in the quilts.
